Tutoring review by Corrie in Jersey Village, TX
We have shifted our focus now from fiction to non-fiction. Today we discussed what elements are similar and different between fiction and nonfiction. We explored the different piece of a nonfiction text using a book about crocodiles (table of content, index, caption, etc.). We then read several chapters of the book, each time trying to pull out the main idea and several important details. He definitely needs practice identifying the main idea, so we will continue focusing on this concept.

The student and I worked on a few topics. The first was using quadratic techniques to solve problems. The student had asked that I go over it with him because he wasn't certain about a certain step. This topic was from a previous chapter, but the student still took the initiative to seek complete understanding. I demonstrated a couple of problems and then the student solved a few on his own successfully. The next topic we went over was the one he is currently doing in school. That topic is Ellipses. He had about 15 homework problems. The student grasped the concept quickly and was able to efficiently solve all the problems. We answered a few supplementary questions, as this is what his mother has asked for. The student is extremely bright and with continued extra work, he will reach the highly proficient level he is seeking.

The student and I focused on the science section this time. We first worked on timing, knowing that there were 7 passages in 35 minutes. We worked through a sample ACT science section timing 5 minutes per section and reviewing the answers immediately afterwards. We then did an entire section. While her score did not improve, her timing DID improve and she was able to answer more questions.

We started today by reviewing the student's math homework. The homework that we worked on was redo work from class. She is working on 2 digit by 2 digit subtraction, but had to redo the work because she forgot to borrow. When we were redoing the work, she did very well. She remembered to borrow on all of the problems that required it. We then did her science review for the test on Monday. The test is on property of matter. She did well when it asked questions about what was magnetic and non magnetic. We then started a new Horrible Harry book and filled out her reading log. We finished by working on adding up the value of coins. She did so much better adding quarters today, and remembered that 4 quarters equals one dollar.

Today, the students and I continued our review of math concepts that will likely appear on the GRE. We started with a review of all of the triangle tricks and relationships that they have learned so far, and then we completed a practice set of problems that involved these relationships. For each problem, they would solve it on their own first, and then we would go over them together, discussing which tricks should be used, and how to set up the problem in the most efficient way. We then went on to a practice set of word problems that reviewed many of the concepts we have gone over so far, and will continue with this set in our next session.
