Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The first student did great today. First we reviewed the number and dates, as well as other vocab. Then we extended from what he has already learned to more format. For example: "my (mom, sister, dad, brother)'s birthday is......", "my (sister, brother, dog, cat) is......years old" . Today's new vocab to write was: I/me/my, is/are and water. We also learned to say and identify 4 body parts: eyes, nose, mouth and ears. The second student was very curious and enthusiastic today. She asked a lot of "how to say..." questions. So after the review, we learned 5 different animals: monkey, panda, otter, sloth and owl. We also reviewed the writing of previous vocab, and how to say "thank you" and "you welcome"."
"The student still has very good associations between English meanings and the Chinese meanings. However, the connection is one direction only, from English to Chinese and not the other way around. With just the hint of the English meaning of the phrases, the student is able to come up with the pronunciation and the Chinese meaning very quickly. So the goal for the next few sessions will be to design a method for him to generate English meanings from the direction of the Chinese meanings."
"I first worked with the student on his math and English homework. I then reviewed adjectives with him and had him come up with a few sentences. I also introduced more about Chinese characters: the system behind them, how they're formed and how to write them properly. I gave him a few characters to learn for homework."
