Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I had my 2nd session with the student. She did HW and we went over the materials that she did not understand, including using a graphing calculator to find answers to cube root, graphing, relations (domain and range), midpoint. The student did great after practicing the same problem a couple of times, so repetition and practice seems to be what she needs most. She finished her HW, and we decided that we will conduct future tutoring sessions in a similar manner and going over anything she does not understand on her HW. We did go over a few strategies to eliminate errors/mistakes while solving math problems."
"The student got a 100% on his last test (he was the only 100% in the class). I worked with him on a warm up involving a geometric figure with angles of 2 unknowns. He recognized that 2 equations were then necessary to be able to solve for those variables. I used inquiry to guide him and he eventually remembered to create the second equation, solve for "x" and input into the first equation. He then successfully solved for both variables and calculated all angle measurements correctly. Next he was stumped on his homework (his teacher often gives absolutely minimal instruction), but we reasoned the work through successfully; problems involved ratios of sides and angles of triangles. Equations had to be created from those ratios and absolute lengths and actual angles found, which we were able to do. He caught on well to a method of diagramming, creating an equation, solving for variables and then calculating sides."
"Today was my first session with the student. We started by reviewing her homework assignments for this past week as well as her study guide for her most recent quiz. This semester's work so far has mostly concerned angles, angle theories, and coordinate geometry. She understands the math behind the concepts, but wants to work on setting up the initial equations based upon the problem given. She is very eager to learn, so I have no doubt that she can master this material with continuous tutoring. For our next session on Wednesday, I will prepare a couple of worksheets to give her practice setting up and solving these equations. We will also review her classwork for Tuesday and Wednesday."
"The student and I reviewed his weekly assignment for his online college statistics class. We worked with probability and combinations. I showed him how to use functions of a scientific calculator to calculate the problems, as well as the method to solve the problems by hand."
"We covered factoring polynomials, factoring polynomials by completing the square, and predicting solutions using the discriminant. The student's attitude was very positive. I showed him what the discriminant represents and how to use the vertex form to find solutions. He received 90% on his previous modules."
"Today our session covered positive and negative fractions and mixed numbers and their positions on a number line. We used a ruler divided into sixteenths to illustrate the concept of mixed numbers. In preparation for future work, we also did some problems multiplying, dividing, simplifying, and comparing fractions. The students were very engaged in the session and did a good job keeping up with the material."
