Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we discussed diagnostic test and screening test instead of statistical test. In particular we reviewed survey analysis and compared and contrasted specificity and sensitivity. The student's discussion assignment focused on deciphering which diagnostic test would be best for a hypothetical situation. We went through an article that her professor provided in order to help her get a better understanding of the key concepts associated with this section. I answered all questions the student had regarding the four methods to evaluate a new test such as sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. I also explained to her the significance of using the gold standard method and how to construct a 2X2 table for results. The student worked through examples in her book and notes to make sure she understood how to set up the table. We also discussed what classifies as a positive result and a negative result. In addition I explained to the student how to use the positive predicative value to justify her decision to use a higher specificity than sensitivity. Lastly I answered questions she had regarding her application assignment. I also gave her advice on how to gain more points when participating in her online discussions."
"We reviewed material from chapter 16, 17, and 18 that covered material dealing with benzenes and alcohols. The material involved mechanism, synthesis and level of acidity for different compounds."
"We went over differences between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes, concerning Replication, Transcription, and Translation. These topics were covered in-depth, to prepare for the short answer questions. We also went over Biotechnology (e.g., cloning, gel electrophoresis, PCR, GMOs) in a more cursory way, since these will likely be multiple choice questions, so she just needs a more general knowledge of them."
"The student did very well! We went over various topics in preparation for her AP Chemistry exam. We discussed the solubility of acids, bases, neutralization reactions, half lives, equilibrium expressions, types of solids, and the basics of organic chemistry."
"We covered mitosis, meiosis, recombination, polypeptides, dihybrid crosses, monohybrid crosses, and free response questions from old AP Exams. This session was specifically designated for genetics review test prep for the AP Biology Examination."
"The concept covered was AC steady state- analysis. The strategy I used was to go over the concepts until the student understood. She showed confidence during the online session."
