Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent most of the time going over skills necessary for the math section, then looked briefly at improving sentences."
"Today's tutorial was spent finishing the math assessment and moving on to an in-depth lesson on the PSAT's verbal section. The student breezed through the sample PSAT math questions included in her tutorial. The key will be helping her choose the most efficient method of resolving problems to shave off time on exam day. During our verbal review, I had the student work through several sample problems independently after modeling the appropriate method and then doing a guided practice problem with her. She has fantastic intuitive knowledge of English grammatical conventions, which will carry her a long way when identifying sentence errors and structural problems in sentences and paragraphs on the exam. To end the session, I had the student do a quick writing assignment where she had to use several grammatical conventions (that are always tested on the PSAT) properly while crafting a short piece to the prompt "On the other side of that door..." The student will have time to finish the writing at the start of Sunday's tutorial before we review her usage of grammar and move on to reading comprehension work."
"Following our typical session format, we "warmed up" with the Question of the Day and reviewing new vocab. We then reviewed and discussed what had been assigned for homework. The student showed marked improvement in her critical reading skills, including in reading the question carefully and looking for evidence in the passage; she also showed a high level of facility with the logic behind sentence completion passages, and will only be held back by vocabulary holes if they show up. I then administered a timed 20-minute CR section. Though she omitted the last 6 questions due to running out of time (in the reading passage section), she answered all but 1 sentence completion question correctly. After reviewing the given two-passage set for the questions, the tutor determined that this was a particularly challenging passage-based reading question set, and discussed ways to tackle even the hardest passages on the real PSAT/SAT. Homework was assigned to begin reading about the Writing section in both BB and TPR, and start focusing on Improving Sentences (biggest area for improvement in past PSAT) and grammar, and to take at least 1 more timed CR section."
