Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We wrapped up our last session before the student takes the test next Saturday. We continued to look at some essay prompts she responded to and I helped her further improve her ability to write an effective essay."
"Since the student is taking the test later this week, we covered aspects of the Critical Reading and Writing sections of the exam. He has been practicing at home and we discussed how that was going. We made the distinction between active and passive voice and when to use comparative and superlative adjectives in writing. Lastly, we reviewed vocabulary in context and making inferences about passages. He left the session feeling confident."
"During the student's session, he worked on crafting a 5-paragraph essay about Arthur Miller's play "Death of a Salesman." The student had many good ideas that needed to be chiseled and reorganized. We worked primarily on strategies for paper-writing, including beginning with brainstorming, moving on to identifying a thesis statement, and writing a strong opening paragraph that culminates in the thesis statement. We also worked on crafting strong topic sentences that would begin the ensuing paragraphs of his essay. As the paper is due tomorrow, I advised him to write at least two paragraphs last night and leave two for tonight. I also offered to tutor him this evening should he need the extra help."
"The student and I began today's session with a familiar reading of a leveled text. Next, she lined up the magnetic alphabet letters in order. We used those letters to practice spelling sight words, which she did a great job with. We practiced switching out one letter to make rhyming words. Finally, we continued the number sort with numbers 8, 9, and 10; we used this sort to make the number 8 page for our number book."
"The student did a great job with the sight words a, at, an, am, as well as and. We're going to work on are, do, for, go and have. We worked on missing letters in the alphabet and beginning letter sounds. He is very active and needs frequent breaks throughout the session in order to get the most out of what he is being taught. He LOVES Star Wars, and was engaged by the materials relating to that."
"The student worked on phonics sounds with basic words. She has some difficulty with blends. We will continue to work on this as well as some sight word recognition. I will be sending some practice words for her to work on."
