Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has a writing assignment he needs to complete by next week for his Geometry class. It is a 200-300 word essay about a famous mathematician. The assignment has clear instructions and so I worked with him in creating the basic structure that the essay will have. I broke up the essay into 4 paragraphs for him, and for each paragraph I included questions he had to address. (The assignment called for biographical information, historical background, contributions to math/science, anecdotal stories). Once the framework for the essay was finished (I also showed him an efficient method of finding proper sources to use and cite and also helped him brainstorm for a quick and easy visual aid to use while he presents his paper to the class), we switched over to Algebra 1. I helped him through systems of linear equations and how to solve for them. He didn't understand where to start with them, but he quickly picked up the concept and completed several problems on his own."
"We worked on review for tomorrow's midterm exam. This was mostly a review of what we've been working on for the last couple of weeks. Student is doing great. Focused on circles (arch length, area of a section) and finding partial areas, or areas of strangely-shaped objects."
"I met with the student on Sunday to review some concepts in geometry. He just wanted to reinforce his understanding of similar triangles and their theorems as well as some of the circles and inscribed angles. He wasn't struggling with anything in particular - he seemed comfortable with all of the theorems. I think he just wanted some confirmation on what he was doing. His attitude is great and that helps him immensely."
"We decided to spend the whole session reviewing chapter 4. The student seems to be doing very well and is showing very strong improvement and motivation which is very good to see. We are already reviewing chapter 4 even though they have not finished chapter 4 as a class yet."
"We worked on the student's unit review for an upcoming test. Topics covered revolved around similarity and proportions including perimeter, area, and side lengths of polygons. The student seemed to have a good grasp on the material. He also told me that he got an A on his semester exam, so that was great to hear!"
"We covered the information for the test tomorrow. Worked on perpendicular bisectors, similar triangles, and determining the values of x based on similarity of triangles. Her last quiz was a 68. We went over the questions that she missed. It seemed to be just the vocabulary and one main concept that was an issue. Both of which were corrected this tutoring session to make sure that she understood the concepts."
