Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I had my third session with the student on Monday after he took his listening pre-comp test. He said that he feels it was easy. His teacher played audio clips from a website, and students had to fill out answers accordingly. One section was about family members and matching identifying characteristics to illustrations. He said that numbers were not tested at all. While we were reviewing for his written pre-comp on Tuesday, he showed me his pre-comp study packet for the first time, and I saw that he had two sections that were graded where he received 0/10 each because he failed to complete them on time. He apparently has a problem with doing and completing his homework, which is an issue we are going to try and fix. He listened to my video clips that I emailed his mother to review for his test including songs for the "to be/to have" verbs. I quizzed him on the verb conjugations and asked him to write them out. He knew about half of them. I gave him tips that all the "to have" verb conjugations start with A with the exception of the last one which starts with O. The "to be" verb conjugations have three that start with S (suis/sommes/sont). I quizzed him until he wrote all of them properly."
"We worked on her homework assignment translating a paragraph from French to English, and answering questions about comprehension. We also worked on conjugation of irregular verbs that she will re-test on tomorrow after school."
"We spent this session working on the student's homework. She is learning about weather but didn't know the vocabulary, so first we learned the words for sunny, windy, hot cold, raining, etc. Then she filled out her packet to practice this vocab. The last part was an online listening activity. She is doing a great job. She is picking up on new structures very well."
"We worked on composition work today. What the student had so far was pretty good. Her direct object pronoun work continues to improve, and she has a good grasp on conditional. I noted today that her confidence is a lot higher from the first session."
"Today the student and I practiced the 'si clauses'. These are hypothetical or future statements. He has a good grasp on this subject and remembered a lot from his previous studies on the subject. To cap today off, we practiced these constructions with open questions, first verbally then written."
"Today was our first meeting after the holiday break. The student's teacher is out for two weeks. The sub is teaching them another verb tense which is only used in literary French. This can be a difficult concept, so we spent the whole time going over how it is used, how it is formed, and looking at examples of it in written works."
