Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered chapter 8 in preparation for a test Thursday. We reviewed asymptotes, finding the zeros, graphing functions, and simplifying functions. He has prior homework problems and his test review to help him prepare for his exam."
"The student takes his final test Thursday and we began going over the study guide today. He showed he has improved quite a bit at simplifying exponents and at recognizing the properties of functions that determine how they are graphed. There were some difficult simultaneous solutions with fractions and some completing the squares examples that we will try to do more of tomorrow. He remembered how to simplify a complex fraction, but I will remind him of that tomorrow as well."
"We covered addition and subtraction of mixed number and improper fractions. We also worked several practice problems of converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions. The student has the skills to solve each question, but can struggle with identifying the correct approach to take to each kind of question. This improved with practice. The student was left with practice problems to reinforce the concepts for next time."
"Today the student and I covered how to find an unknown value of an equal group equation, focusing on how to identify factors, products, divisors, dividends and quotients in a word problems. As we covered the various parts of the problems on this topic, that were assigned as homework, I helped her to recognize the fact families and how they can be use to find unknown values. During this session I gave her some detailed instruction on how to use repeated addition to help her with multiplication; I helped her to see how fact families can be used to convert multiplication facts into division problems, and I reviewed the strategies that can be used to recognize the given parts of a multiplication or division problem so that she could use this knowledge to identify an unknown value and the operation that can be used to find it. The only extra practice that I assigned during this session is continued study of her multiplication facts. A big win from this session is that despite her struggles, the student continues to show a willingness to put forth an effort to get better and she is always eager to set up the next session."
"This was a good session with the student. Today, we talked about curve sketching techniques and prepared for his quiz this week."
"For this session, we worked on a review for the student's test on Friday. We worked through it step by step, paying special attention to the word problems, which were her biggest challenge. I also made sure to bring in plenty of practice problems for her. By the end of the review, she was feeling very confident, and so was I. She seemed to have learned a lot."
