Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We discussed problems in solutions and general equilibrium. We discussed the specifics of the nature of concentration while discussing dilution problems, emphasizing ratios over brute calculation. We talked about solvation, and how to approach solubility with a reduced set of memorized solubilities and an emphasis on the stability considerations. We discussed energy profiles and concepts in chemical thermodynamics. We discussed why transition metal complexes are colored. We then moved on to thermochemistry, discussing the relationship between specific heat and heat capacity. We discussed entropy, simplifying the approach to solving problems concerning it. We discussed quantitative problems using Hess's law and Gibbs free energy. The student had difficulty sorting out seemingly contradictory statements about the energy required to break and make bonds. With the use of an energy profile diagram, he was able to understand my explanation of the unbonded state, standard state, and Hess's Law. The student was grateful to have guidance simplifying the approach to entropy problems. I told the student we would discuss phase equilibria and begin acids/bases next session, and that he should read ahead of time for it."
"We focused mainly on quantitative, doing a wide variety of questions. Some of them were very challenging, but overall the section went well. We worked especially on work word problems, which proved to be ok. We also did 3 blank completion questions, which the student finds easier than some of the other formats, and some reading comprehension."
"We had our first meeting this week and used it to set a baseline and establish goals for our upcoming sessions. We will be using the GRE test prep book and decided that the best approach will be a complete math review to start. We spent a large portion of our session reviewing the format of the exam and talking about the two essays. We also worked through a few practice math problems together. I asked her to start going through the review sections of the official guide this week. I will also be sending her some additional materials to help us structure and track our review progress."
