Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I focused completely on admissions test prep. We reviewed some problems from all of the sections that I need to cover with him (he has a separate tutor for the reading section) and we talked about strategies for the essay. We also talked about strategy in general, and then I had him do a little practice run through each section so that he could get a good feel for the pace of the test. I had him do a chunk of questions in each different section and then we compared how long the questions took him to how long the questions should have taken him, so that he would know what pace he should try to work at during the test. Overall, this was a successful session and I hope he does a bit more of the practice test like I recommended so that he feels nice and prepared for Saturday."
"The student reviewed a few concepts for his math final including exponents and radicals as fractions, finding domain of functions and identifying when undefined, completing the square, factoring by grouping, and projectile problems. The student worked on problems in his math workbook involving decimal numbers and multiplication, and moving the decimal when multiplying by 10, 100, 1/10, 1/100, etc."
"The student and I reviewed the letters m, h, and l today. We both practiced writing the letter n and named 4 things that started with that letter using a web diagram. I also introduced her to the word: the. We are still working on our sight word: like. She is starting to grasp the strategy of one to one correspondence as she is doing better pointing to each word as she reads. She read a new book today that had our previous sight word "like" and did a wonderful job doing a picture walk before she read. She wrote a simple sentence today that included: "The teacher likes me," for which she made a connection to the book she just read. She was also able to tell me 3 things that happened in the book. For the last 10 minutes of our session, we worked on counting and sorting out cubes to the amount of quantity I asked for."
"The student and I started up our tutoring again by practicing all four of the ACT sections. She was well focused tonight and had a good attitude about the test. Her math skills have held up, and she looks to be improving in science as well."
"Evaluated student's strengths and areas for improvement by means of a practice exam evaluation. Explained general concepts of errors to student. Practiced sentence completion with student, discussing clue and direction words. Chose vocabulary words to practice for next session's quiz."
"This was the student's last session before taking the assessment on Saturday, October 6. He had worked on a practice exam the day before, and we reviewed the test. We covered a little more grammar this time, and on any vocabulary questions we made a note of words he wasn't familiar with, which we reviewed several times throughout our session. For math we reviewed how to find the fastest and simplest ways to solve problems. On one grid-in question he was unsure how to mark a certain type of answer, so we discussed this and saw that he had actually found the correct number but just needed to turn it into a decimal or improper fraction. We talked through any missed or skipped questions and discussed more test-taking tactics, such as when to make a guess on a question and when to skip it."
"We went over the review for the upcoming quizzes and tests on implicit differentiation and related rates. The student seems to have a good grasp on the former, but he should really spend some time working related rates problems for repetition."
"Went over some chemistry concepts that the student was having trouble with in school. Summarized the periodic table trends and the characteristics of some of the major elements. Also reviewed for a Spanish II test that the student had the following day. I quizzed her on the vocabulary of the chapter and the conjugation of irregular verbs."
"Because of spring break, client did not have any homework to work on. Instead, session primarily focused on reducing and adding fractions with different denominators. Reinforced ways to keep math work organized to help avoid confusion."
"We covered solution chemistry, fluids, and solids. In solution chemistry we covered different measurements of concentration, solubility product and molar solubility. In fluids and solids we covered modulus numbers, pressure, and more. For each topic we did several practice questions, and then finished with a practice passage."
"The student and I met for the 2nd day in a row to continue reviewing for his final exam. We did some online exercises for his class and also a few that I found myself. One key aspect I tried to focus on was improving the student's reading comprehension - making sure that he wasn't just filling in the blanks and had a full understanding of what he was reading."
"Today we reviewed terms and equations for savings accounts, tax calculations, investments, and loans in preparation for the student's test tomorrow. Since he had missed the class on loans, we focused on that packet and worked several problems with a focus on the methods he needed to be able to set up the solution correctly."
