Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued working from the assessment practice book. During this session, we reviewed the first half of practice test 8, which had been completed prior to my arrival. This half-test consisted of the essay portion, one math section, one writing section and two critical reading sections. I was pleased to see that she scored almost perfectly on all of these sections. She writes fluidly and performs very well on both critical reading and writing. We ended our session by going over vocabulary flashcards and word-roots. I assigned the second half of practice test #8 to her for homework."
"The student and I spent this session following up on a request that he had made toward the end of our previous session to work a little bit on the multiple-choice portion of the writing section. He let me know that he isn't at all worried about the essay, but he does find some of the grammar points that show up in the writing section questionable. We used samples improving sentences and Identifying sentence error questions to go through the most commonly-tested grammar. Specifically, we practiced the approach of checking any underlined verbs first to verify that they are in the right tense and form; then checking any underlined pronouns for agreement with their antecedents; next, checking any comparisons or lists for parallel construction; and finally, looking for any mis-worded formulas or punctuation errors. We also looked at how some of the suggested rewrites in the improving sentences questions break the grammar or punctuation of a sentence even while seeming to improve the style. I asked him to apply the grammar review and the strategies we'd discussed to a sample writing section before our next session; after we finish up our writing review, we will almost certainly return to the critical reading section."
"For our first session, the student and I did some practice problems in order to get a diagnostic for her strengths and weaknesses on the test. We worked on sentence improvement and identifying the errors first. She did about average on both of these sections. We will work on tools for eliminating answer choices and guessing as well as grammar and mechanics that most frequently appear on this section of the test. We also worked on math. She has a firm grasp of the math concepts that are tested. We will work to make sure she knows what she is being asked in order to facilitate using the math skills at her disposal. Lastly we discussed the essay. She is used to writing essays in the format of the SAT so I don't foresee her having much trouble there. We will work on organization and tips there. I left her with root words and prefixes to study in order to facilitate improving her vocabulary."
