Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first session for the test. The student had a previous tutor for the test, so it was a little repetitive for her, re-reviewing her results from last October. We reviewed all of her omitted and incorrect answers on the Critical Reading and Math sections, and targeted the exact areas of difficulty. The goals of the session were to lay the groundwork for knowing where to go next. She struggles most with the 'Organization and Ideas' and 'Meaning of Words' questions on the critical reading section. To help with the first, I passed on a couple of tips for tackling passage-based questions in general that will hopefully alleviate time anxiety. We did a little research and found that Great Expectations and Jane Eyre are two novels particularly suited to the test vocabulary prep. I've read both and highly recommended them. For our next session, she will read one of those novels and focus on practice questions for the critical reading 'Organization and Ideas.' She will also work on practice questions for 'Reasoning' and 'Connections' for the Math section. These are her two most difficult sections, but both of these are particularly well-suited to practice and will automatically improve as she continues to learn in high school."
"During this session, the student shared with me some practice she has been doing using the PSAT writing section tools I sent her. We went over some of the questions that were still confusing to her. We continued practicing this session by working through an English section from the PSAT practice book. She still needs to work on idiomatic expressions with prepositions (sometimes in a sentence she will not notice that the wrong preposition has been used), so I am sharing a study guide with her to use for idiomatic expressions. I also gave her a math formula cheat sheet, though she does not need to memorize it for the PSAT."
"We covered reading strategies, vocabulary, and some math. I left the student with extra reading and practice materials."
