Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I worked to complete two English assignments. First, we read an online lesson about vivid verbs and transitions words. Then we worked together to write a short story that used these words. After that, we read a short story, and we completed the writing assignment that accompanied it. I showed him a few places where he could add details or use stronger vocabulary, and he did a great job making adjustments. By the end of the second assignment, he was using a lot more details without my help."
"The student did much better today with her reading comprehension. I will be getting the book she's reading in class soon, so that I can start building her quizzes and prompts based on it."
"We worked on sentence combinations, and ways to connect sentences. The concept consist of organizing sets of short, choppy sentences into longer, more effective ones. However, the goal of sentence combining is not to produce longer sentences but rather to develop more effective sentences--and to help become a more versatile writer."
"We had a great session. We worked more on reading his (green level) books, which are not presenting much trouble (but are presenting him new challenges). He is having an easier and easier time with the blended consonant sounds that are the topics of his green books so far, but I think some review will be helpful for continued memorization of the vowel sounds."
"During our session today, we worked on the letters and sounds that the student is having difficulty identifying. I then introduced 3 new sight words which we practiced. I gave him the words and told him to practice reading them. We will review them next session. If he can read them, I will add additional words. If not, we will practice those 3 words. We also spent some time with rhyming words and cvc words."
"We reviewed several of the student's spelling tests, and on most she received high marks and she continues to struggle with capitalization and punctuation. I administered several mock tests on which she did improve in these areas and tried using punctuation marks in the form of riddles to make it fun for her to remember and understand. Despite these challenges our session was very productive and she read extremely well after we corrected all her spelling errors. We will continue to review her spelling test each week in preparation for her weekly Friday spelling test. She was focused and eager to do her best."
