Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we covered reflexive verbs and possessive adjectives. We also had a conversation in Spanish. The student was able to ask and answer questions in this conversation with minimal guidance. He did really well in this conversation and was able to apply concepts we've learned in the past. We practiced translating sentences and he was able to conjugate verbs we've worked in the past that I had dispersed throughout a paragraph. We discussed finding a book for him to read in Spanish and will review all material covered thus far in the next session. Overall, I am impressed with how much he has retained throughout the break. He is making good progress."
"We covered new vocabulary that his teacher provided about food. It corresponds with unit 6 in the textbook, which I encouraged the student to see if he could bring a copy home from school or purchase one online to keep at home. I can imagine that it is difficult for him to recall words that he doesn't know the definitions of in English! He is essentially learning two words and two cultures simultaneously, in that respect. In those instances, we looked up pictures on Google images so that he could develop an association with the definitions in English. We created a menu together, and I gave him a "mini quiz" where he defined words. I asked him what his plan for studying was. We came up with some strategies like using flashcards, writing down the word, drawing a picture and then writing the words beneath, and having someone quiz him."
"We reviewed pronouns and the conjugations of common verbs. We then practiced using these verbs and reflexive verbs. After going over exercises for irregular "shoe" verbs and learning about the use of "por" and "para," we practiced conversation."
"We reviewed the present subjunctive, the imperfect subjunctive and conditional verb tenses. I gave the student a technique to use when filling in blanks for quizzes or exams and I helped her with identifying the correct subjects with verb usage to find the correct verb tenses. I gave her a site she could go to for extra practice."
"* The student continues to add phrases to his script. * Today, we discussed the vocabulary necessary and/or pertaining to playing a game. * He is perfecting his "ordering skills" in a restaurant."
"We started off with a basic introductory lesson today. We reviewed the student's prior knowledge and revisited greetings and colors. He is very knowledgeable in everything we covered today. It was a great session and he has great potential. Next session we will focus more on basic conversational skills."
