Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began Unit 3. We looked at food items in a restaurant, numbers, and restaurant vocabulary. We also looked at 2 dialogues and several exercises in the workbook."
"The student did an excellent job today. He can work on the negative adverb and adjective section of the French practice book. For extra practice, I would suggest using adverbs to write a paragraph of ten sentences about activities he: often, rarely, sometimes, never does, or only under specific circumstances (ne..que). The student could also review the three ways to ask questions (inversion, est-ce que, and intonation) and prepare some questions to ask me using the "vous" form for next session."
"The purpose of this session was to review some of the key concepts the student learned in French 1 in preparation for her beginning French 2 at the end of the month. We briefly reviewed self introductions and then focused primarily on the present tense verb conjugations of both regular ER verbs as well as some of the most common irregular verbs (etre, faire, aller, avoir). She has a good understanding of how these conjugations work; many of the verb endings she did not remember initially but recognized quickly when reintroduced to them. She only needs a bit of practice to become familiar with and comfortable using them. She is a diligent and motivated student whose hard work and concentration were much appreciated! I will follow up by email with some short exercises for her to complete in order to practice using the verb conjugations we reviewed today. She should pay special attention to the first and second person plural forms ("nous" = we, "vous"= you plural/formal). Next week we will review more of the vocabulary she has previously studied, focusing on nouns and adjectives. We will go over some sample dialogue as a final review."
"In our last session, the student and I covered directions, how to ask for directions, and also how to give them. With this, she will be able to ask for directions while she is in Paris. This was a bigger step for her as it was learning new words and concepts, however she did quite well. As always, we covered what each word meant in English and spelled out the words pronunciation based on how she heard them as I said the words. She grasped the concept very quickly, and did quite well in our little practice quizzes. As always, she was eager to learn and she was very active in her participation and asking questions. I would stress that she practice on her own with pronouncing words, as well as asking for directions. We will cover them again in our upcoming sessions. Practice outside of our sessions will help her remember the material."
"We covered a theme today: life in university, using some videos and vocabulary linked to the theme. The strategies were to familiarize the student with different registers of language and different speeds. So next session we will focus more on grammar and tenses. She has extra practice exercises to finish for next time."
"We covered beginners conversational French, with emphasis on meetings, introductions and directions. The material was very well reviewed and received. The main focus moving forward will be pronunciation, remembering accents, and remembering their sounds. The student was left with practice of phonetics and greeting phrases. Great lesson overall."
