Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first session together and I was trying to see where the student is in the two classes I'm there to tutor: chemistry and English. In English class they are in the second half of Frankenstein and for a time during our session she read a chapter looking for quotes that could be evidence for a predetermined set of themes. During that same time I looked over a chemistry test she'd just gotten back."
"We covered some very basic concepts that to build confidence and comfort with the stoichiometry. We decided that she would arrange to email me PDFs of upcoming homework or assignments she would like covered."
"We discussed Newman projections in addition to drawing and naming cyclohexanes. The student felt pretty confident. I gave the student some strategies to name and draw conformational isomers. Overall, the session went well."
"We spent the first 15 minutes reviewing the student's homework, including identifying places in numbers and being able to verbalize larger numbers and decimals. She has learned how to verbalize and identify places very quickly and has mastered this concept. She is still struggling with multiplication. I had her draw out the whole multiplication table from 1-12 on her own and timed her. She was able to complete the whole table within our goal time of 15 minutes at 13 minutes and 15 seconds total but still had to count on her fingers for the 7's and 4's. When I add the aspect of the timer, she is motivated by the competition with herself. She is learning best by being timed and trying to beat her old times. This aspect of a timer really keeps her focused and with a goal in mind. Again, she needs to be able to answer multiplication questions in under 5 seconds. Please have her go over her multiplication cards for at least 15 minutes each day and have her time herself in order to stay focused. I am going to bring stickers/ pencils/ some sort of prize next week to reward her once she masters the harder numbers. We ended with a quick 10-minute study session for her Spanish quiz. She was learning simple conversational phrases in Spanish, and had a lot of fun acting them out. Her accent is impeccable! I can tell that she learns really well through movement and conversation."
"The student worked on math. Then he worked on a PowerPoint assignment about his state. We also worked on addition and subtractions of non common denominators and played a Bingo multiplication game."
"The student's homework for tonight was to study for her social studies test and her math test. We reviewed the information on early hominids and she took 2 online practice tests. I reviewed with her strategies on taking multiple choice tests. We used these strategies on the online practice tests. She first took the test on cave art paintings and missed 2 out of 17. Next she took the early man test and missed 1 out of 20. She felt very confident on the material. We made flashcards for a timeline on early man with the names of the early humans and who and when they were discovered. We discussed possible topics for the essay question and how she would answer the question Next we worked on her math study guide. She was extremely successful in answering all the problems. The only area I would have her study would be the order of operations."
