Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In our second session, the student and I worked on strengthening math skills and continuing to improve critical reading scores. We opened by going over the practice tests that she had taken during the week; I explained questions she was having trouble with, and we discerned that she would need to continue to work on vocabulary. I provided her with practice sheets and information about word roots, prefixes, and affixes. This combined with vocabulary-in-context skills will help her improve response to both vocabulary-specific questions and comprehension questions about texts with complex vocabulary. For the second half of the session, we concentrated on math skills. She had gone over the math section of her PSAT book, and felt confident about most of them. So she worked on practice problems to ensure that she had indeed mastered those skills, and I provided feedback about how to respond to particular questions more rapidly. Her math skills are very strong, however, and she does not need much work in this area. Finally, for practice, I gave her some more math problems she could work on, and I am also sending her more practice passages and vocabulary practice."
"We spent this session working on vocabulary, word problems, and grammar. Word problems: how to translate percentage problems into equations, how to do 'what will the new average of this set be if...' problems, how to assign variables to unknowns, and how to re-cast those variables in terms of known quantities. Grammar: we went over modifier clauses; these are important in themselves, but also because grammar questions often insert long modifier clauses between the subject & verb, between sequences of verbs (indicating tense), etc.; separating parts of the sentence in this way makes it harder to spot errors; thus, we worked on identifying and (lightly) crossing out modifier clauses in sentences from the grammar sections of the test; we will continue reviewing grammar in the remaining two sections. Homework: look up the assigned words and word roots, complete and grade the specified pages of math and grammar questions in the student's practice book, and write up his own guide to word problems (to be refined in the coming session)."
"We spent most of the session working on practice problems from the Reading section of the test. We also reviewed some work with the Writing section."
