Houston French Tutoring FAQ

Whether you're interested in a Houston French tutor for you or for a student in your family, consider reaching out to Varsity Tutors to connect with an experienced instructor who can provide the guidance you or your student needs. Private Houston French tutoring can support professionals and students of any skill level. This could be just the thing to help you reach for your language goals, whether you're completely new to the language or are an advanced learner seeking to solidify their skills.

How can I work towards fluency with a Houston French tutor near me?

Though it can be challenging to learn, the French language is spoken widely throughout the world. Perhaps your student is struggling to understand the difference between "la," "les," and "le." Maybe you're preparing to travel to a French-speaking country and want to be able to communicate with the locals. Or perhaps you are interested in studying French as a means of communicating better with colleagues in other countries. No matter what your or your student's goals may be, an expert Houston French tutor can guide you through the language.

When you study with a Houston French tutor, you can follow along with a completely customized study plan that focuses solely on the concepts in which you have the most room for improvement. Your instructor can analyze your existing skills, interests, goals, and other factors to create their academic plan. By focusing only on the areas in which you have the most opportunity to grow, you can spend each session working towards a deeper understanding of the material you need without spending more time than necessary on topics like pronunciation. You can work through your lesson plan at a pace that works for you. Your mentor can analyze your progress as you learn, allowing them to provide feedback and change concepts as needed.

Houston French tutors can utilize an arsenal of teaching techniques, which can help them create lessons and activities that are conducive to your learning preferences. By catering to your learning personality, you can engage in the material on a deeper level, regardless of what you might be studying at the moment. For instance, if your student is an aural learner, their Houston French tutor can provide opportunities for your student to research key concepts, like gendered nouns, and perform oral presentations on the topic. Perhaps you learn best when presented with relevant visuals. Your mentor can incorporate flashcards, flowcharts, and videos to help you build a stronger grasp of conversational French vocabulary.

By participating in individualized Houston French tutoring sessions, you or your student can receive regular opportunities to practice the language. Your instructor can assist you by simulating immersion throughout each lesson. This is important because learning to speak a new language requires that you devote enough quality time to practice your growing reading, speaking, and writing skills. Houston French tutors can lead your lessons entirely in French, which can help you feel more confident in your ability to converse with other French speakers in the language. In addition, immersion can help you feel more natural with the French language.

Throughout each session, your instructor can provide insight into your efforts to learn. They can spend time helping you better relate to the language in a variety of ways. For instance, your instructor can assign you a book or movie that is entirely in French that revolves around a cultural subject that you enjoy, such as music or art. By interacting with material that relates to your personal interests, you can work towards a deeper understanding of the material as you are more likely to enjoy the assignment.

Today the student and I met for an hour and 15 minutes. I prepped for half an hour. We went over prepositions and numbers and did the vocabulary exercises in the textbook. French Tutoring review by Nora in Houston, TX
Since the student doesn't have any specific assignments or upcoming assessments, we spent this session practicing the new vocabulary and structures that her class has just begun working on. Specifically, we talked through her morning routine using reflexive verbs and several nouns that accompany reflexive verbs, talked about what makes a verb reflexive in French and finally reinforced the vocabulary by playing Pictionary. She was more willing to use the French words that we worked on and to experiment with communicating in full sentences. I was very happy to note this progress.

French Tutoring review by M. Nadjib in Houston, TX
During this session the student and I reviewed some of the expressions covered in previous sessions, such as introducing oneself (name, age, location, job, marital status, hobbies...etc.) as well as discussing the seasons and the weather. We then learned about basic expressions to use in case of an emergency, ranging from how to ask for directions when lost to asking to see a doctor or where to find a police station. Finally, we learned and practiced expressions to use when going to a restaurant.

French Tutoring review by Anna in Houston, TX
The student is all caught up for French! So we went through his homework that was due for his next class session. He is studying reflexive verbs, and he also had a listening exercise. After spending about 40 minutes on French, we switched gears to his remaining theme due in English. He chose the theme of "light and dark". We discussed the various things that light and dark can mean, including the idea of something being open or shut, easily viewed or hidden, good or bad, natural and unnatural, clear conscience or guilty conscience, etc. To analyze this theme for his short composition, he chose the scene after the murder. The student is pretty good at seeing analogies, especially with this theme. He clued right in to the idea that the unnatural acts discussed were referring the audience to the ultimate unnatural act in the play, the killing of the king.

French Tutoring review by Alexandra in Houston, TX
We began with reviewing the passe compose, imparfait, and plus-que-parfait tenses; specifically the conjugations of the auxiliary verbs 'etre' and 'avoir', and when to use each of them. We then went over a mnemonic device for a list of verbs that require the auxiliary verb 'etre', to further help differentiate when to use it over 'avoir'. Then we completed the student's homework exercise on conjugating sentences into the plus-que-parfait tenses, all the while practicing identifying the subject and direct objects of each sentence to help identify what the verb should be agreeing with.
