"Today we worked a little more on the student's essay. I helped him organize his thoughts and sort through the information he found in his sources. He maintained a positive attitude and was focused during the session. I urged him to continue searching through his sources to find more information and to incorporate it into his paper either by citing it or paraphrasing. He will need practice with linking all of his information to the topic sentences in each paragraph."
"Today we continued working on his essay. To motivate him, I challenged him to write the first draft in 10 minutes, and he managed it in 11 minutes. Then, I had him add in the sentence openers and paragraph dress-ups that I've taught him. For homework, I asked him to do the same on his own, so we'll see how well he does with that. It's just a matter of practice for him."
"As the student was finishing The Catcher in the Rye, we spent most of the session discussing the book for her in-class discussion and close reading of a passage from the book assignment. For the discussion, she was to argue that, besides being mentally ill, immature, or hypocritical, Holden is, above all, a philosopher (though he may not be cognizant of it). With close analysis of the text, this was a great opportunity to strengthen her inferencing skills which she's taking to quite well. She truly appreciates this "reading between the lines" tactic and understands how to look at evidence to support themes and motifs of the book which aren't always obvious. It was a session well spent furthering her literature analysis skills for discussions and essays. We also went over her original sentences using the SAT vocab words which, as usual, were excellent!!"
