"Student 1 and I started off by working on analogies. I broke down analogies into 7 bridge sentence categories: degree, definition, function, part of whole, lack, type/kind, and characteristic. I gave her examples of each of these bridge sentences from analogies like "a finger is part of a hand" and showed her how to replace the parts with the answer choices to see which made sense. She said she liked this method and felt like the bridge sentences helped her categorize and answer the analogies. We worked on analogies for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Student 2 finished her practice essay by writing her third body paragraph and conclusion. She was able to write a solid third paragraph with plenty of supporting ideas. We then discussed how to use our introduction to write a conclusion. We started with a shortened version of her thesis, summarized her supporting arguments, and wrote a solid concluding sentence that wrapped everything up. We will work on revising this essay during our next session."
"The student and I jumped right into the Reading and Writing sections that he had for homework from last time. His overall accuracy and speed are definitely improving, and he is becoming more familiar with the question and answer formats. In the Reading section, we are working on having him answer the questions more quickly, since he is able to answer the questions both correctly and consistently. We discussed how he can spend a little more time on the English questions the first time he goes through them so that he can avoid simple mistakes. We ended the session by discussing the scoring and rubric for the Writing test and going through what a stellar essay includes. We discussed the student's own writing practices and patterns and how to either apply or disregard them in the context of the ACT. The final few minutes we turned to the Science section and tackled a few specific questions from a previous exam. The student's homework is to take two Writing tests, so we can compare and contrast different approaches to the pre-write, and to take one Science test."
