Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had an excellent first session talking about the SAT test as a whole and reviewing the Mathematics portion in particular. She has a very strong grasp on all of the concepts involved in the Mathematics section (and as she noted -- many of the problems aren't really testing the math per se as much as they are testing the student's ability to comprehend a problem and to set it up in the proper way!) -- so we spent a lot of our time discussing strategies for handling problems. How do you identify the sort of problem this is? How do you go about solving it? She's often very capable of solving a problem if she takes a systematic approach to the test! She's a very curious and energetic student -- a real delight to work with. I look forward to watching her develop test taking skills and techniques so she can master the real thing!"
"We reviewed some of the trig we started last session, as well as some probability concepts. Then we jumped right into logarithms, which he had never seen before. As expected, he seemed to get it relatively quickly, though he does need to do some more practice with them to fully internalize the process. It's a matter of exposure for now, so that's what we're focusing on - getting used to the way they present the problems, and knowing which properties to use to solve them."
"Since we went over writing and reading comprehension last time, we used the TOEFL website to do some exercises in the listening and speaking exercises. She did well and on the last listening exercise, I recommended she do the easy questions/ ones she could recall quickest first, and found that when she did that she built her confidence and got all the questions right. Previous times, she had missed 2-3 per section. I think she will continue to improve."
