Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began by attempting to review briefly the major concepts from our first session. We then moved on to Air Resistance, examining it with both free-body diagrams and in terms of Energy. Next, we attacked Inclined Planes, going through the derivation of the reductionist approach, and reinforcing through repetition the critical summaries for all problems of that type. We then worked through several different plane problems, showing the student how to decide which forces to equate in order to use Newton's 2nd Law. She already correctly knew that acceleration was the shared variable, and thus the lynchpin linking the 2nd law to kinematics. We discussed planes in terms of energy, and discussed how the Work (energy) applied to a barrel to lift it was entirely used to raise its potential energy. We introduced power to explain why ramps make raising objects easier without decreasing the Work applied, and we began to launch into circular motion."
"We covered kinematics and Newtonian mechanics. The student was already familiar with a good amount of this physics material, and demonstrated that he could solve problems comfortably. He needed help with ramp problems and projectile motion problems. We covered a few problems from both topics in detail. I assigned ten multiple choice questions from the end of the chapter in his assessment review book for homework."
"We began the session by reviewing the student's latest practice essay. His organization and focus have improved. We then spent time on a set of five reading comprehension passages, some of which the student practiced his skimming on. Next, we did a review of Monday's vocabulary list. We finished the session with a half hour of geometry review. By continuing to practice these problems, I anticipate we'll see a steady improvement in speed and fluency."
