"Today, we began our session by practicing multiplication facts and identifying their related addition facts. For our lessons, we learned about perimeter and area. For perimeter, we began counting units for a perimeter of a shape on a grid. Then, we practiced using addition and multiplication to solve perimeters of shapes with some equal sides. Next, we focused on area. First, I had the student count the square units in a shape on a grid to find area. We looked at some shapes that had partial square units and practiced estimating area by combining partial square units into whole square units. Finally, I taught the student how to use multiplication to find area in squares and rectangles."
"The student showed me two quizzes that he had taken and got back since we began our sessions. Then, we prepared for his test on Friday by working through several problems on the review packet provided by the teacher. We focused on questions involving finding the volume of 3-D solids with various cross-sections via slicing. We began by finding the area of a square given the length of the diagonal and of an equilateral triangle given the side length. I stressed the importance of either memorizing these formulas or being able to derive them quickly in order to be able to solve slicing problems quickly. We practiced using several different types of cross-sections. We then practiced determining whether to use discs, washers, or shells to find the volume of a 3-D figure with a rotational axis of symmetry. I emphasized finding the easiest function to integrate."
"I began the session by asking the student to count by 4's and 6's. He remembered the 4's very well, so I had him repeat the 6's several times until he was able to get them quickly and accurately. After this we moved on to addition flashcards. He was able to break his record of 18 flashcards in 2 minutes. He was able to finish all of the sections that were remaining on the two worksheets. We then went over flashcards again. Finally, we played the fraction game during the time that remained."
"We performed some practice word problems concerning geometric and arithmetic series and sequences, and how to associate keywords with particular parts of the formula."
