Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student has an exam tomorrow on forces, so we focused on test preparation for our session. We began by completing test corrections from a previous quiz on which he did poorly. For one of the problems, he needed to show more work, and for another, he confused mass versus weight leading to an incorrect calculation. For the other problems, he did not interpret the question properly. I underlined key words/phrases that revealed the significance and characteristics of different quantities; for example, because an object is "lifted" that means that 1) there is not a normal force because there is no surface and 2) the force applied is upwards. He did well with the inclined plane problems. His conceptual understanding is still lacking, and unfortunately his class is also moving rapidly, so there is a struggle between filling in previous gaps and keeping up with material. While he pushes to come up with shortcuts and rules of thumbs to answer problems, I try to work on concepts because there are always exceptions to rules and often he overgeneralizes. We went over steps to approaching and reading problems, and he agreed to apply them to practice problems provided by his instructor."
"During this session we went over vectors. We did problems in the study book. Overall this session went well."
"We covered writing formulas, naming compounds, ionic and covalent bonding, cations and anions. I did not see any scores/grades to note progress but I was told that she progressed from a B- to a B. By the end of her midterm at the end of January, I believe I will see even more progress. She just needs a little more self confidence and to take her time doing her work. She catches on quickly and she shows genuine interest and determination."
