Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session the student and I covered two sections. Both sections were about word problems. One was specifically value word problems and the other was a broad topic of word problems. We went through both sections together and discussed different ways to break down the problems into a system of equations to solve. She did great on the value problems because they were so similar to the coin problems that we worked through last week."
"At this session, the student worked on his exponential decay homework and exponential problems. He understood the homework and was able to solve the problems quickly. His homework required him to use an exponential decay equation to find a car's value after x years. I showed him the proper way to simplify a negative exponent problem. Also, I showed him how to select a point, identify the coordinates for that point, then plug the X value into the given equation. Next, solve for Y and compare it with the Y value from the coordinate pair."
"During this session we reviewed the problems I sent the student to complete, which covered the distributive property and using the FOIL method. He is quickly picking up the building blocks and will soon master them with some more practice. New material covered in this session included expanding the grid FOIL technique to larger functions, factoring simple quadratic equations, and solving sets of equations."
"We did review with the quadratic formula and some word problems and inequalities and some work with word problems and parsing out the correct information. We are at a point where it seems like the student has a good grasp of the concepts, so now we need to work on neat work and understanding the process as a whole. What helped me stop making small errors was complete solid understanding so that I had a better idea of what the result should be, and constantly second guessing myself and neat work. It's a habit she'll need to form to get errors under control, and to do it she'll need to do lots of practice. She should do extra practice from her book and will ask for extra if needed."
"We worked on volumes of cylinders. I found that he had some trouble with this. I will change my tactics in the future."
"The student and I had a good session yesterday going over completing the square and solving quadratic equations without a "bx" term by taking the square root of both sides. The student exhibited a good grasp on this. We also got the chance to review how to take the square root of a fraction. We finished with a couple word problems having to do with area. With the progress we made, I am confident that the student will do great on the upcoming exams!"
