Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session we worked on sentence structure and organizing his thoughts prior to beginning his writing. The student is very intelligent, just needs help with using higher level vocabulary and structuring his sentences in a more cohesive format. He openly receives feedback and responds positively. He wasn't left with any extra practice material, but some tips for what he should include on his writing planning sheet."
"We started the session by reviewing the questions on his Of Mice and Men Socratic seminar worksheet. We were able to cover some of the background information and characters. We then worked on identifying and creating elaborate supporting details for body paragraphs. We worked through several exercises: Look at a topic sentence and add two supporting details, identify which detail in the paragraph disrupts the unity, re-write a paragraph using more descriptive supporting details. Lastly I had him rewrite a conclusion to include a summary of main ideas, restate the thesis and analyze/synthesize the information. He seems much more receptive to writing lately and very aware of his strengths and weaknesses."
"The student and I looked at the assigned writings I had her do, and we talked about the structure of her essays once more. The essay was a persuasive one, and she has thrown in convincing arguments in an eloquent manner. We also analyzed another person's essay for rhetorical devices, such as repetition, rhythm, metaphors, etc. She seemed to benefit greatly from this; in the beginning of our analysis she could not see the literary devices used in the essay but toward the end she was beginning to understand."
