"The student and I spent the session discussing and approaching the different question types presented on the writing sections of the SAT. We began by doing an exercise in participles. I introduced the concept, the past and present forms, and the use of participles in sentences. She caught on quickly and did an excellent job of first identifying incorrect uses of participles in sentences and then correcting them. At this point we went over the first part of the writing section she had done for homework. Reading the questions aloud really seemed to help her identify grammatical problems. We switched gears and I talked her through the approach to identifying sentence error questions. We talked about common grammatical problems to look for when doing these kind of problems: subject-verb agreement, noun-pronoun agreement, misuse of participles, incorrect comparisons, errors in idiom, etc. We spent the rest of the session redoing a set of identifying sentence error questions that she had found difficult. This time around, she did a great job of narrowing down answer choices and correctly justifying her final answer. She seemed to gain more confidence with every question. I left her with a section of reading to do before our next session."
"The student is doing an excellent job in her SAT prep! Her test is this Saturday, so she did 2 math and 2 critical reading sections to go over today. She has been missing 1-2 questions in math per section. She did have one problem related to line graphs that we had not seen before so we went over that. She additionally missed fewer questions in the CR section - she continues to work on finding supporting statements in the paragraphs for her answer choice. We spent the rest of the time going over the math section in the practice book to ensure that there were no problem types that she had problems with. She has improved tremendously in the math section and I strongly believe this will reflect in her scores this weekend. Lastly, we went over the practice vocab section in book - there were a couple words that she had not seen before (and that were not on our list) so we discussed the definitions for those. Finally, we started to go over the vocab from the direct hits list. She knew some of these words, but she needs to focus on memorizing this list before the test on Saturday. I will drill her on these again on Thursday. She will additionally work on one essay section. I have provided her with a practice test from the book and she will do as many of these questions as possible."
"We went through one final practice in complete reading and writing. He scored a range of 700-730 in writing and about a 740 in reading. He is certainly well on track for a great performance; his only weaknesses are subtle details/specifics in the question stems. With a little more practice, he should do excellently."
