Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During my session with the student, we went over more review material for her final. The topics covered were all about trigonometric functions, how to plot them, evaluate them without calculators, and identities. She learned a lot during our time together, and she is clearly much more comfortable with the material."
"We spent the session correcting an exam that the student recently got back. Some of the simpler errors she was able to catch on her own. Some of the concepts we worked on were characterizing parabolas and composite functions. After reviewing fractions she was able to correct all of her exam."
"We went over a practice test to prepare the student for her radical functions exam. Questions covered were finding the various properties of the function (domain, zeros, range, extreme points, POEs, end behavior) and using those functions to sketch the function. We also went over linear estimation using first derivatives. A couple of questions looked at rates of change with those derivatives. She did very well with the rate of change questions and is doing well with the other material as well. She is getting much better at factoring polynomials and remembering where to plug critical values in to find extreme values. Going through multiple questions helped her jog her memory on the steps for solving these kind of problems."
"Today we covered one-to-one functions, inverse functions, general exponential and logarithmic functions, the natural exponential and natural log, systems of equations, laws of exponents, and population growth word problems. He did very well and made a lot of progress - he was able to do the problems by the end of the session. I also gave him some extra reading material on a math website."
"We pored through various aspects of polynomial and power functions (graphing, end behavior, factoring, points of inflection, turning points, maxima/minima, and more). The student readily absorbed all of the concepts and should be well prepared for tackling this unit."
"This was a good session. We reviewed our coordinate circle and our new trig functions and their identities: sec, csc, cot. We also looked at solving point of elevation problems or using relative triangles we measured shadows, skyscrapers, and even estimated the radius of the earth. At the end he showed me some chemistry he is working on."
