"We worked on both some writing practice and one of his homework assignments today. For writing, he had written a research paragraph on Great White sharks which was pretty good. I also reviewed a homework assignment with him which was an excerpt from Romeo and Juliette about which he had to answer a few questions. I asked him leading questions to help him understand the dialogues so he'll have an easier time doing the homework now. Next week, I'll continue working on writing with him and I assume there will be another homework assignment that we can work on."
"In working with the student's English skills and SAT prep, we went over and discussed some vocabulary words from a list of the 1000 most common SAT words. She is keen on various strategies I touched on to identify what kind of word a word is and how to discern its meaning from roots, suffixes, etc. We worked on and went over two sentence completion exercises that called for selecting correct vocab word(s) to be inserted into a sentence. Her instincts serve her well and she's in the 90%-95% range on these so far. She also completed a timed 25 minute writing prompt from a past SAT which will be graded using the SAT rubric and discussed next week. We discussed how to approach timed writing assignments and how a solid plan, with 3 main ideas to support a thesis, is key to ensure a solid response. For next week, she is to write a minimum of 10 original sentences using unfamiliar words form the aforementioned list. She is very sharp and a fast learner."
"We worked to edit a paper he had written on the importance of teaching grammar in school. We edited ideas and content, word choice, evidence use, and citations all using a template I created."
