"When I arrived, the student told me the essay was due that day, so he had finished it in class. We worked on an application essay for a summer program his parents want him to enroll in. We made a list of the actions necessary to answer an essay prompt then began to brainstorm a way to a thesis for this particular essay. We managed to get a thesis and the beginnings of an outline for the essay."
"The student received a 20/20 on his essay outline. I created a essay organizer for him because he expressed that he has difficulty organizing his ideas. We completed his introduction, first body paragraph, and began the second body paragraph. His body paragraphs included a topic sentence, relevant evidence to support his topic sentence, analysis of his evidence (he surprised me with how quickly he was able to catch on to how to do this), and connection to other events in world history. We will meet again on Monday at 6:00 and most likely Wednesday at 6:00, also. His first draft is due on Thursday."
"Since this was our first session we worked on organizing thoughts via making an outline/planning guide. We also discussed ways to word things differently. We started working on how to create a hook to grab the reader's attention and on a thesis statement. The student has some trouble with not being extremely descriptive when writing. He understood the gist of what he was writing on, but we will need to practice using grade level vocabulary and descriptors throughout his writing. He was eager to participate and is aware of his weaknesses/strengths with writing. When I provided him with feedback. He accepted it and worked hard to apply the tips I gave him. Closing the session, I left him with a writing prompt to respond to/create a planning guide for. We will pick up from this point in our next session. Since this was his first session and he's on spring break I haven't seen any of his grades or progress reports."
