Tutoring review by Tami in Fourth Ward, NC
The student made the honor roll! He brought his math average up from 78 to 83. I'm very proud of him. But most importantly, he is very proud of himself. It shows in his confidence when doing homework. In fact, he insisted that he only complete Monday and Tuesday's homework during our session because he wanted to work on Wednesday and Thursdays on his own tomorrow. He completed the homework for the beginning of the week. He did very well with adding fractions and is maintaining his multiplication and division of 2-digit numbers well. He had a little trouble with equivalent fractions, so we took a little break to review equivalent fractions. He is now able to visualize and create models for equivalent fractions. He mentioned that next week they will be learning decimals, so he and I went over basic fraction-decimal equivalents for common fractions (1/10, 1/4, and 1/2). Using the model of money, he was able to see that he uses decimals in everyday life and fraction equivalents. It reinforced the equivalent fraction concept that we had just covered. He was able to see that 5 dimes, 10 nickels, and 2 quarters all represent different fractions of a dollar, but those fractions are all equal to the same decimal.
