"The student and I practiced the same technique for answering critical reading passages. She skimmed the passage while focusing on the specific lines asked in the questions."
"This was the first session I conducted with the students since they took the SAT in January. I was thrilled to see how much each of the girls had improved since the beginning of our sessions (a 200 point improvement for Student A and a 150 point improvement for Student B). Both girls scored extremely close to their goal scores and I am confident that they will be able to achieve their goals on the second time around. (Student A, aiming to ultimately break 2000, scored a 1910 and Student B, aiming to ultimately score 2300, scored a 2220). Both students were pleased with how they performed on the multiple choice questions, but they found that they got flustered when taking the essay and scored much lower than they knew they were capable of. (Student A scored a 6 on the essay and Student B scored a 7). We discussed strategies for stress management. In our session, we reviewed both of their essays in detail, noting the places where they strayed off topic or used vague/ abstract language. I think the primary problem was that they each wrote solid essays that didn't quite answer the question at hand. We did a practice essay in our session, and I assigned them each two timed essays for homework."
"The student and I spent most of this session working on the reading comprehension test. We started with the passage based reading. I shared a few tips and he did very well with the passage based questions. From there, we moved on to the sentence relationship questions. The only aspect of identifying the relationship between given pairs of sentences that he found at all tricky was the presence of questions where none of the answer choices seemed quite satisfactory. Nevertheless he did a good job of choosing the best option even in those circumstances. There were only a couple of questions that he struggled with at all. Once we talked through some approaches for the particular points of challenge that those questions presented he did admirably with the rest of the reading questions. We also laid the groundwork for our work on the essay test in our future sessions. After talking through the planning writing and editing process using a sample prompt, I asked him to prepare an essay on that prompt within the word count limit of the test."
