Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is getting better at remembering her multiplication facts and fact families. We worked on fractions and she is having a little trouble understanding that fractions are a part of a whole, and that the higher the denominator the smaller the part of a whole. Her addition and subtraction are progressing nicely and she is now able to automatically know certain problems."
"Today, I proctored the girls as they took practice ACT Reading and Science sections under testing conditions (that is, with the time limit enforced and no communication or distractions). On both sections, Student 1 finished just under the time, while Student 2 had to quickly guess the last few on each section as time ran out. They each earned comparable scores on both sections as well. Student 1 drastically improving her Science score in the process! However, since nearly half of Student 2's errors came from her guessed questions, I think that she should be able to score even higher if she can budget her time better. Next time we will do an English practice test and go back over time-management strategies."
"The student and I met to cover concepts of solving for x squared, and she did well. We also covered completing the square, and solving quadratic equations, using the three different methods. She is doing well, but needs a little more practice and understanding on why we solve, or simplify certain equations the way we do. Otherwise, I think she is doing very well, and learns very quickly. I look forward to working with her more. "
"In biology, we covered DNA and RNA structure, and transcription and translation processes. In geometry, we worked on the Pythagorean theorem, which the student understands well but had trouble applying. She started Geometry without having taken Algebra I, so she's struggling a little where Algebra knowledge is assumed; but she is a dedicated student and is learning facilely."
"The student and I began the session with a longer reading passage. She alternated reading sections aloud and silently, and then we discussed each section to test her comprehension. At the end, she answered several multiple-choice questions about details from the passage. We spent the second half of our session working on multiplication. We did a variety of time tests, starting off relatively easy in a pretty generous amount of time (30 questions in 2.5 minutes) and then working our way up to 40 questions in 2 minutes. We talked about the need to practice, especially the 6, 7, and 8 facts -- when she does those on a times test, she usually gets them right but it takes her a while, so she ends up getting easier ones wrong because she rushes through them too quickly. Practice makes perfect, so we will keep practicing these -- she has definitely been improving even over the past few weeks!"
"This was the first meeting with the student. We introduced ourselves and talked briefly about interests to get acquainted. After this, we jumped right into the SAT guide book and worked on critical reading in the first practice test. We got through the word selection and short passage parts, which left him to complete the long passage and compare passages for homework. We are trying to meet twice a week for one hour each time. Next meeting will be Monday, April 2nd."
"During this session, the student and I reviewed our weekly vocab words including pronunciation, definition and sentence contexts. We discussed enhancing her sentences so that a reader would know and understand the definition of the word. In addition to the weekly list of words, we added several from a novel she is reading in Literature class. Next week, we will continue learning the vocab words and incorporating different methods of memorization and application."
"We started working on the math/quantitative side of things during this session. She is very confident in her math skills and she should be; she's very sharp and did very well on the 2 practice sessions she did before we met. We went over her practice tests and made sure she understood all the concepts. She did much better on the math portion than the quantitative portion, so we know what to work on for the next session."
"I was able to answer questions on many topics even though I was there for Biology. There were many more Math and Chemistry questions than Bio, but in the end, I have also received a few Biology questions. Overall, I enjoyed the team attitude and wouldn't mind doing it again!!"
"Today, the student and I worked on the first English Test in ACT test guide. His answering is correct 85% of the time which, no doubt, is a major improvement in accuracy since we began. For homework he is supposed to read and work on twenty pages of The Reading Comprehension Section."
"The student and I practiced solving systems of linear equations using matrices, their determinants and inverses. We also worked shortly on partial fractions. The student is a faster learner and a bright mind and will certainly master the concepts needed in few weeks. The session went great and we planned to meet on Wednesday."
"The student and I finished covering the math section and then covered strategies and question types for the Integrated Reasoning session. I also explained how best to guess on the various question types if he runs out of time, which can be an issue in that section."
