Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I went over Simplifying Rational Expressions, in preparation for his exam on Thursday. He did really well with the concepts and is slowly becoming a master at this. We will be going over more information and problems tomorrow, as well as making his index card. "
"Today the student and I had our last session. We reviewed the literature and writing portions of the ACT, coming up with a strategy to improve her speed and accuracy. We agreed that it would be most efficient to start from the back of the section and work forward. This strategy worked wonderfully!"
"We finished our review of Kinetics and we looked at the supplemental problems along with the examples from the practice test. The student's assignment for our next meeting is to work on some acid-base titration problems."
"The student practiced learning how to ask yes or no questions, and how to answer questions about whether one is American or Chinese, and if one is a student or a teacher. We reviewed the vocabulary for the next lesson which is about describing one's family. We also practiced the song she had started a couple weeks ago about two tigers. The student also learned how to say Happy Thanksgiving."
"The student and I worked on a rough draft for a history paper about the reconstruction era. He organized his ideas in an outline and researched the topics related to his paper. From his outline we constructed an introductory paragraph and started the first few paragraphs to his paper. We talked about good strategies to writing essays. I also showed the student how to review the rubrics to ensure that he is addressing all points the teacher expects him to cover."
"First, we discussed problem solving strategies for word problems. He worked through several that he had for homework. Then, we practiced simpler factorization problems. At the end, we were able to spend more time on the word problems. He practiced solving word problems as well as writing equations and solving with a number. By the end of the session, he was able to solve several word problems with little prompting."
"Reviewed previous quizzes and exams to review. Then we covered the next two sections in the book and worked on couple practice problems. She seemed to understand everything towards the end."
"The student and I reviewed 3D geometry, and began the data interpretation sections. She feels comfortable with geometry and is doing really well. For our next (and last) session, she will take a timed practice test. We will finish up data interpretation, focus on quantitative interpretation questions, and review her test."
"We went over slope, concentrating on how to draw negative and positive slopes, as well as slopes of lines that go through the origin. We reviewed his science paper and discussed organization, rewording sentences, and grammar."
"The student and I reviewed for his test tomorrow or Friday. I quizzed him on vocabulary, dative prepositions, dative articles (definite and indefinite), dative verbs, and dative personal pronouns. We also did a few exercises from the book to practice applying dative case. He is doing very well and definitely knows the dative case and understands it. I was very impressed."
"During the last session with the student, we went over the topic of populations in biology. The main concepts that we looked at included carrying capacity, exponential versus logistic growth and the Hardy Weinberg principle. In the following session, we will be completing chapter 15 and will be specifically looking at difference underlying assumptions that allow for the Hardy Weinberg equilibrium and how changes in those factors disrupt the equilibrium. The student easily picked up the concepts and contributed several self-taught examples of these biological concepts."
"The student and I reviewed math homework, reworked problems that were incorrect and moved ahead into formulas. Since this is the student's first time working with equations that have only variables, the homework will be lighter than usual, in order to focus on getting this new concept down."
