Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session we prepared for the student to read the Odyssey through an anticipation guide and writing prompts. The anticipation guide was a survey to get him in the mindset to read the epic play with his class. Next, he wrote a few short paragraphs that were Odyssey themed. I gave him set amounts of time to brainstorm, write, and then proofread, to help him organize his thoughts and manage his time in class. In these writing exercises, he had very creative ideas, but struggled to open with a strong introductory sentence and to answer the question that was asked. Tonight we focused mainly on topic sentences and we will continue this next session. With a strong topic sentence to organize the paragraph, it should be easier to stay focused on the prompt."
"Reviewed writing assignment I gave him last week (a five paragraph argument paper on MLK's "Letter from a Birmingham Jail"). Worked on improving transitions within and between paragraphs. Worked on introduction, including context and attention grabbing "hook". Assigned conclusion for next week."
"We worked on a book report assignment. We read the story together and discussed some of the big ideas. He articulated his thoughts well and, when we started writing, was really taking his time, which resulted in clear sentences. Though there were still some grammar errors, for the most part, he was writing slowly and correctly. As always, he was attentive and respectful."
