Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"[COVERED]: We discussed Acid-Base reactions, using our previous discussion of Equilibrium Chemistry as a springboard. We began by discussing the 3 definitions of acids, and how each was successively more inclusive, also discussing how to recognize a dative bond, and tying Lewis Acid/Base reactions into the Nucleophile/Electrophile reactions of Orgo. We then compared the acid-dissociation reactions of HCl and Acetic Acid. We next generated a table of how to recognize strong and weak acids, which required a discussion of how poly-oxygen-bearing acids were strong, which also covered the charges on their biologically important anions. [PROGRESS/CHALLENGES]: The student had clearly pre-read, and knew many facts about handling these types of questions. [EXTRA PRACTICE]: She will review the acid-base questions from the practice exam she took over the weekend. She will generate a list of questions to review once she is done. In addition to those, we will also discuss Electrochemistry during our next session."
"We went over practice MCAT test and focused on the chemistry questions. We talked about acid/bases, stoichiometry, equilibrium, and oxidation reduction."
"The student and I met to cover the physics topic of momentum and collisions, something she identified as an area of weakness after taking the practice MCAT Test 3. She had done a lot of legwork on this topic before we met, pre-reading the in-depth chapter in the test prep materials I provided, but still needed a little bit of reinforcement on how to distinguish between the types of collisions. Because she had a solid foundation of the concepts and equations involved, we were able to spend the majority of the time practicing this material with three passages. She was doing a great job on these passages and is making big improvements in her ability to justify why she is choosing or eliminating an answer choice. Since she isn't taking the test until January of next year, I haven't wanted her to take another of her 7 remaining practice MCAT tests yet, so I haven't been able to monitor her progress this way, but I think she is certainly progressing with the physical science material. Our next session will be 6/24 when we are planning to cover phases and colligative properties."
