Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered a review of SSAT Math this session. We did practice problems for fractions and decimals, factors and multiples, solving for x, and roots and exponents. We went over missed problems as needed. They worked diligently the entire session and paid attention. Student 1 usually got about 60% correct, Student 2 about 75%, and Student 3 about 70%. We have some work to do to get the missed problems, but with persistence and practice, their scores should go up!! Great work, everyone!!"
"In this session, the student and I worked through a series of selected practice problems relevant to the three sections of the SSAT. He did better in critical reading but still struggles with unusual or advanced vocabulary in the verbal section. In my observation, he truly cares about improving his potential score because he maintained a high level of focus and interest during this meeting. I understand that a two-hour session can appear to be a bit tedious, but he was interested in the material nonetheless. To aid in his verbal performance, I made sure to reiterate the strategy of "dissecting" complex words into more recognizable prefixes and suffixes. This technique has worked for past students, and I believe that it will help him as well. For extra practice, I recommended using the online practice questions. I believe that he has progressed since our first meeting (based on question performance), but we still need to work on vocabulary."
"We worked on a reading comprehension practice test, and the student did much better on this than she did on the verbal section the day before. When she really reads the questions carefully instead of just picking the first answer that comes to her mind, she does very well."
"The student and I spent the greater portion of our sessions covering math concepts including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions; converting fractions to decimals and vice versa; and solving equations. She marked the pages with math exercises for completion on her own time. Lastly, we covered more reading comprehension strategies and applied them to a practice passage and its questions."
"We reviewed the student's math for the quantitative sections, particularly: percentages, multiplication/division of fractions, and cross multiplication."
"Practice test questions; review of answers for two sections taken prior to tutoring session. The student needs improvement in quantitative reasoning and problem solving."
"We reviewed the student's math homework and the strategy of plugging in answer "C" first to optimize for speed. We continued studying vocabulary for synonyms and analogies."
"We went over a practice writing sample I assigned for the student. She did a very good job for her first essay with me, coming up with great examples and understanding the essay format. We then tried some synonyms, focusing specifically on strategies of how to handle questions when you don't know the words. I assigned analogies for homework."
"During this session, we worked on verbal and did some math and reading comprehension. The student knows the material. She needs to work on familiarizing herself with the types of questions on the exam and pacing herself."
"We discussed her background and aims for high school education. We reviewed the format of the test and discussed testing strategy."
"Math review: half a math section, timed, and arithmetic and percentages, decimals and fractions review."
"We focused on the Reading Comprehension section of the SSAT. The areas to focus on with the student were identifying the main idea and tone/attitude of a passage, as well as reading a bit more closely."
