Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we reviewed math and science. His overall performance in math has improved. During our science practice today, I was extremely impressed. He did not miss a single question and was confident in every single one of his answers. He grows more and more confident every day and I am loving watching him progress."
"We started by reviewing practice test 2 -- he scored a 31, 34, 36, and 33 respectively (33.5 overall). We started on practice test 3 and he scored a 34 on English. We got through the first 35 of math. His homework is to finish test 3's math and science and all of practice test 4."
"He had written the two essays, but again preferred if I read them at home and not in front of him. The ideas they have in them are not bad. We spent half of this session on reading comprehension and the other half on math. He does have good math skills as far as algebra goes. His homework is to write another essay, continue working on the math questions, and learn some more vocabulary."
"She has benefited from recognizing PBR traps, learning when and how to plug in numbers, learning how to eliminate answer choices in all sections. Her confidence is growing in all areas. She is extremely bright and a pleasure to work with."
"I had assigned her several problems on fraction simplification, partial fractions, and complex word problems to complete herself. She did quite well on them. We then turned to the back of the college algebra textbook and did some of the most complex problems in the book. We made it through all of them together."
"The student and I made excellent progress, mainly focusing on the science section of the exam, after his tremendous strides on his own time. He's familiar with effective test-taking strategies at this point and we've created a plan that plays to his strengths and helps him to counteract his weaknesses. He may take the exam a second time (in October), but is now at a point where he'll practice by taking full exams on his own time, continuing to work on pacing and stamina. I'm proud of the determination he's shown, as well as the improvements he's made."
"We went over some concerns about the speed of sessions and the best way that she can absorb the information. We then went over questions from a diagnostic quiz she had taken. After that, the main focus was on reading comprehension and how to breakdown a question and how to narrow down the answers. I'm going to send practice problems every couple days to ensure that she is exposed to as much material as possible."
"Great first session with the student! We went over some strategies for math and will continue to work on terminology and word problem interpretation. In the reading section, we went over some comma usage and discussed using the mood and topic of a passage to help with sentence interpretation questions."
"The student and I began the session by tackling the writing portion of the ACT. I recommended that she take the optional writing portion to avoid college requirement mishaps when applying with her ACT scores. Together we read the writing prompt and discussed the possible stance(s) she could take. I had her do a timed prewriting exercise, followed by her writing the introductory paragraph to the essay. The session continued with countless timed practice problems from each subject, in order to balance the question-per-minute approach and the content. Since time permitted, I had her close the session out by adding more to the essay. For homework, she is to finish the essay before the next session. In addition, she and I took a few minutes to create an outline/schedule she is to follow to ensure practice from the test book every single day."
"Today we covered math and critical reading. For the first hour, I went over logic and algebra concepts with her and we talked about the several strategies for approaching math problems. The second half of the session was spent going over critical reading. I had her go over two passages, which I attempted alongside her. At the end, we compared notes and answers. I helped her to understand where she made mistakes in understanding passages and questions. At the end of the session, I gave her some pages of problems from all 3 sections for her to complete by our next session on Monday."
"Today we introduced the topic of matrices and their operations. We discussed addition, subtraction, and multiplication of matrices. We also discussed how to take the determinants of 2x2 matrices and nxn matrices. We then used matrices to solve systems of equations having one, zero, and infinite solutions and discussed how to parametrize the latter case."
"We went over her math practice section of the diagnostic SAT test I gave her. We went over some techniques that would help her attack some questions. I gave her some more practice questions and material to go over until our next session"
