Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Note, this session was related to C, not C++. We worked on topics pertinent to making a multi-bucketed hash table, basically using linked lists to implement each hash bucket. The student needed some discussion regarding void pointers, memory management, and function pointers (and their application to this project in specific). She did very well, as always, and seems to have grasped the new content readily."
"The student brought a technical paper he had written which will become part of his thesis paper. We started by talking about the general topic of his research and how this technical paper fit into the overall structure of his thesis. After that, we went through the paper in detail and talked about any grammar and punctuation mistakes or sentences with awkward phrasing. Some topics that came up were: articles (a, the) and how to use them correctly, phrasing ("good performance of" became "accuracy of"), semicolons versus colons, the need for introductory paragraphs prior to new subsections, avoiding repeating transitions words (therefore), and "countable" nouns. We only went over two pages but I felt that the pace was appropriate since we spent a lot of time talking about the "why" behind changes and discussing rephrasing options."
"Continued reviewing for the final next week. Reviewed earlier topics related to process synchronization and CPU scheduling. The student continues to have trouble absorbing technical details of synchronization. I assigned several textbook exercises for tomorrow."
