Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The session began with the student and I reviewing the sounds of the long vowel "i." He and I continued to practice reading comprehension. I noticed that he had difficulty retelling the passages we've read together in the past, so we practiced retelling skills during this session. I also showed him how to read the questions first and then read the passage afterwards as a tool to help focus during reading."
"In our session, we covered how to make inferences based on the text. We discussed how making inferences make us better readers and how it is different from making predictions. In the session, we read a folktale and a Greek myth. We wrote about the central themes in each passage. Each passage had multiple choice questions and short responses. For homework, he will begin his essay response that includes writing about how the folktale reflected power in human nature."
"Reviewed vocabulary words by playing the "matching game" with index card pairs of words and definitions. The student seemed to enjoy the competition with me and did well reading the cards and coming up with sentences using the words. Quickly reviewed Greek/Latin root words that the student is starting to learn for school homework. Gave the student some books to choose from to bring home."
"We covered reading passages, types of sentences, synonyms & antonyms, and prefixes/suffixes. I was pleased to see that material I had introduced prior to these lessons was retained by the student. He was able to grasp many of the concepts independently. For the topics that were more difficult (labeling sentences and marking subject/predicate), the student required more structure. He continues to progress well and I am pleased with how he is performing."
"This time we specifically studied for her social studies. She is a great student and continues to amaze me. We studied over 40 terms in a little over an hour and she had them memorized. I will work with her to get her to perform well when being timed. She continues to gain confidence with each session and works diligently."
"The student is a great reader when poems are involved so I had him start the session by reading two poems and to watch for punctuation. After the poems we read a few chapters of the Captain Underpants book and the student is reading with more expression. Like yesterday, I had the student reread one of the poems using a strip of paper to follow along and there is a noticeable difference when he uses the tools given to him, now its my job to make sure that he continues using those tools to help him read even better."
"The student worked with me today on writing paragraphs as we continued to work on her spelling. She's fantastic at making the sessions more creative for herself, so she feels more open and ready to create."
"We worked on reading and writing skills. We read a couple of passages and answered reading comprehension questions. When the student answered out loud, she was accurate, but we will work on her written responses, paying close attention to details."
"The student and I discussed some reading strategies. Since we were at the library, we found a couple of books that she was interested in. She then read the books and applied the reading strategies we had just discussed."
"The student and I worked on Reading comprehension. We read from a novel he had previously chosen. We focused on vocabulary as it came up in the novel, using context clues to determine new meanings. The book he selected is a challenging one for his age level, but he is up for the challenge and it will bring good discussions to our future tutoring sessions."
"Student completed math home work - Estimating Products. For reading I went over a grammar worksheet. The student completed the worksheet with a score of 85% by identifying each group of words as a sentence, question, or fragment and then rewriting each as a sentence with the correct punctuation."
"Reviewed shape vocab and talked about parallel vs perpendicular lines. Also reviewed addition and subtraction of 3-4 digit numbers. Worked on making personal connections to story and identifying beginning, middle and end of the section she read. The student is improving at being able to identify character traits and make predictions about relationship in line with the traits."
