Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During today's session, the student and I worked on both math and reading. We began the session by reading a book which was provided by her school entitled Silly Milly. The book is very interesting because the children need to find the patterns in the book. The next book we read was called Fly Buzz Fly. She enjoyed this book because it shows a fly on an adventure. It also shows students how to make inferences about the rest of the story. We ended the session with sight word practice. Her highest score was 29/41 in one minute. For the next session, we will work on more sight words and reading."
"The student came prepared with a Google site that she had to give a presentation on tomorrow. We went through each slide and made sure that there were no grammatical or citation problems and corrected any issues we found. Then, we went through each slide and created numbered note cards and outlined her main points that she wanted to make sure she touched on. Then, we practiced her full presentation multiple times and timed it to make sure it was within her five minute guidelines. We talked about ways to help her keep calm because she feels very nervous presenting. At the end of the session, I gave her some homework: I asked her to practice at least twice more standing up and timing herself and to practice pronouncing words she struggles with. We will be meeting next week at the same time."
"The student completed a handwriting worksheet. He also completed 3 sections of the phonics program. He read the first "Slam Dunk" book in the series. We also read together the first chapter of the third book in the "Magic Tree House" series."
"We focused on another essay about a famous zoo. As usual, the student and I outlined the project before she does a final version. At the behest of his mother, we began to look up all words that he did not know in the dictionary. He was usually able to guess how he spelled the words wrong and make the corrections before looking at the right way to spell it. I was satisfied with the progress he made today, as he continues to come up with his own ideas without much prodding on my part. I believe he is growing more comfortable at making his own writing choices, which is always good to see!"
"We had a truly fantastic session today! The student got a perfect score on his spelling words and read in his level 3 book fantastically. I was extremely impressed with how much he is transitioning from someone who is learning to read into someone who reads. I am so proud of how much he has worked to make his reading his own."
"Today I worked with the student on reviewing the American Revolution: famous people and what they did, the Declaration of Independence, reasons why the colonists turned against England in the first place, and why the patriots won the war. As usual, she needed a few reminders to stay on task, but she did a lot better than last week. By the end of the session, she was able to talk about most of the things I mentioned above (famous people, what they did, etc.)."
