Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student completed her weekly PE assignment, her Module 7 quiz for geometry and its following lesson, and two English chapters and their assessments and quizzes. She also worked on her milestone assignment in health, and two projects for her freshman seminar."
"The student reported that he completed his science unit test last Friday. Also that he had a math quiz today and thinks he did well. He has a new science packet. He did 2 pages of work in the new packet. He has a history test next Tuesday so we studied history for an hour. I asked him questions and he could answer most of them. He also needed to complete some homework in the history packet. He worked very hard and had good focus."
"Today I was mostly just getting a sense of the classes the student is in, the concepts they are learning in each of these classes, and how he is doing. We went over some vocabulary terms in his English and Human Geography classes and discusses how they could be used in context as opposed to just their definitions. We looked at the chapter review in his geometry textbook and found some problems that he needed help with. We went over the concepts and he figured out how to solve those problems. We started talking about Spanish briefly and decided we would focus on that more during our next session."
"The student and I worked on his history and spelling homework. The student had a worksheet to complete, which we did, but we also spent a good deal of time working on reading skills. I shared with him a few tips about taking notes and summarizing chapters, in order to help him better retain and comprehend the material he reads. The student mentioned that he finds writing summaries to be more useful that making flashcards, which makes sense to me. So we talked about how to look for the important points in a chapter, how to summarize these points, and how to make sense out of a larger historical narrative. I think this will be helpful for the student, but it is also something we'll spend a bit more direct time working on in the weeks to come. After finishing up with history, we moved on to spelling. We began by working through the definitions of all of this week's spelling words, rather than doing so as we went along. I think this really helped the student, and he had very little difficulty finishing his worksheet. It was good to talk with the student today about his needs and interests when it comes to his tutoring."
"This session we worked on 5th grade math concepts, such as number values, adding decimals with like denominators, multiplying fractions by whole numbers, and volume of shapes. Today he told me that he completed his assessment and he passed it. He has a reading and verbal test to work on and is also going to keep working on math."
"The student told me that his milestone test is coming up, and he wanted to practice some of the subjects that will be on the test. I found a end-of-year 5th grade test online, and we decided that we would start on it (it's a big packet). The first page went over addition and subtraction using multiple digits and regrouping, while the next page worked on estimating/solving decimals in word problems. He also practiced rounding, place values, expanded notation, and written and number forms."
