"This was the student's next to last lesson before he will take his SAT. We began as we normally do, by reviewing the two Math sections which the student has completed previously and this time his sections were very different. One section beat his high score!! The section had every question correct except for two unanswered questions. The student certainly knows how to deliver results again, and again, and again. As usual, we went over the incorrect questions, and then categorized them by type in order to practice problems of that type. This time, the major topics included: questions involving slope calculations and using slope to obtain coordinates, questions involving combining the concept of a function with a known equation, like area, as well as basic computations when it comes to equation manipulation. It is this last topic that is the student's greatest weakness, so I had him complete several practice problems in session so I could observe him doing them and coach him through them. His Math scores on the practice sections are quite good already, so we are just fine tuning at this point. Anyway, the student completed the questions and then we went on to question regarding slope, and using a function to obtain a point or using a point to standardize a function. We worked through several other practice problems until the end of session. five out of five stars"
"Continued working on the Math section of the ACT, working on practice problems, formulas, basics, and more. The student seems to be getting the hang of more of the Math problems, though, he still needs to review the formulas more and perhaps practice more with the Math problems. We also spent some time focusing on the English section of the ACT. Here, the issue seems to be mostly with getting the correct phrasing rather than grammar/punctuation."
"The student and I focused today's session on reviewing math concepts that will appear on the test, as this is what she felt she needed the most work in. We started off the session reviewing the practice questions from each section of the test that I had left her with (which she answered nearly perfectly and had very little trouble with) and the vocabulary that had challenged her in our previous session (which she had obviously studied and breezed through). I began our Math concept review with some ACT Math Jeopardy. It revealed that her most challenging areas are trigonometry and some coordinate plane geography. I then supplied her with flashcards covering the majority of the concepts she'll need on the match section of the ACT. Before we began going through the flashcards, together we set a goal that she would know 80% of the concepts without trouble, because this should guarantee her the score she's hoping for to make her application competitive at her desired colleges (she's considering DU and University of Utah). She got 89% of the concepts without trouble. We finished by tackling a few practice questions, which she largely breezed right through. The ones that seemed to keep hanging her up were questions involving arithmetic sequences. At the close of our session, I promised to send along some resources by email regarding arithmetic sequences in the case that she wants more review before Saturday. Her mother and I had spoken about the possibility of an additional session on Friday, but the student feels pretty confident and at this time doesn't feel that she needs another session prior to the test. I left her with the full-length practice test in the case that she wants to do a full dry-run, but otherwise, I encouraged her to take Friday evening off from studying to prepare for Saturday. I have no doubts that the student will do great on the test, with an anticipated score in the low 30's."
