Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed concepts for her geometry test tomorrow. We used her chapter tests and textbook to work on problems, and to review definitions and make flashcards. We reviewed: triangle proportions and ratios, Pythagorean theorem, similar and congruent triangles, geometric proofs, and conditional statements. She was able to work through a lot of the problems herself but needed reassurance to build her confidence and some clarity on how, when, and why to use the different systems she's been learning. We worked through a number of practice problems and she said she felt much more confident and prepared. She also made flashcards on the different conditional statements to help her memorize them."
"The student and I worked on preparing her for a geometry exam. Although there were some concepts to iron out, by the end of the session, the student had a very clear understanding of the concepts that are going to be assessed on her exam (i.e. calculating angles/arks of circles, with various variables)."
"Today we spent our session working on the student's geometry homework which dealt mostly with finding side lengths, angles, and areas or several shapes. We began finding the area of trapezoids, kites, and rhombuses using the triangles to determine the lengths of necessary sides. The next section we worked on dealt with regular polygons, their radii and apothegms. We used the formula A=1/2(apothegm)(perimeter) for several regular polygons. To obtain the needed lengths we worked with implied triangles inside the figure and used the Pythagorean theorem and properties of 30-60-90 triangles. We ended with a general overview of all the concepts we had covered."
"We reviewed algebra I material: factoring. Using guided release instruction, I went over examples of difference of squares, greatest common factor, trinomials, and "tricky" trinomials. We also went over setting up ratios for percent questions. If we have extra time for review at a later date, we will work more on tricky trinomials and review slope as well. The student did pretty well recalling how to factor. He was engaged with the material."
"We went over some more volume problems and how to solve when given things like perimeter or circumference. We finished with a review on exponents and how they work with a few practice problems."
"The student has switched to a new topic in class - special triangles. Given that the material was new, he had a little difficulty with remembering the rules for each of the triangles. In order to battle the easy confusion with the 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 triangles, I gave him some mnemonics that used to help me. This should help with avoiding the double guessing. As soon as he continuous to practice with these triangles, he should have an easier time. Today was also a mini review of radicals and how to simplify fractions with radicals. He did really well with it! He was able to complete all of his math homework this evening, and we will start with some practice problems during our next session."
