Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began reviewing for the student's final exam in genetics. We started making notecards and looking at old exams. We also reviewed mitosis and meiosis."
"We went over simple harmonic motion and waves. This was new material and a little difficult to explain. We're reviewing today before his exam on Friday."
"Upon meeting the student, I noticed that she is a very sharp and eloquent girl who does well in all her other classes but just can't seem to do well in the sciences. She told me she has a problem with the large amount of information in AP biology. She also told me that she puts in the time to review and study but can't seem to process the information, and the information she does end up processing she forgets after the test. I decided to start discussing photosynthesis with her, since this is the topic that she just started covering this week in class. We went through the chapter and discussed every aspect of photosynthesis. I focused on giving her a very conceptual understanding of photosynthesis and made sure that, in every step, she knew the biological purpose behind the step and where it was taking place in the overall plant cell. I wanted her to understand the process conceptually so that she could stop focusing on memorizing detail and be able to predict the next step in the mechanism and give me reasons why it's important. I would then ask her to take me through processes by herself so I knew she was following. I wrote notes as we went through the chapter, which I left afterwards for her to review. We both decided that it would be best for her to read the chapters before attending class. She also agreed to read my notes and review the topics after our tutoring session so that she may ask me to explain anything she wasn't clear on during our next session. Overall, she told me that my approach is really helping her understand the material."
