"The student and I went through a few practice problems from each ACT section, just to gauge where she stands on each. She seems to be at the average level for each section, maybe struggling a little bit more on the reading and science sections. I gave her basic test taking skills and tips for the ACT, and in the next section will continue to go over several strategies for how to get problems correct."
"During this session we finished going over the rest of the student's practice sections and then I had her continue to do problems in the math section. Often, she would think that she did not know how to approach a problem, when in fact she knew the underlying concepts but failed to identify them within the problem. I think her confidence was given a boost when the problems made complete sense after I explained them and she understood that more familiarity with the test and how the ACT asks questions would bridge the gap between her knowledge and doing well on the exam. I stressed to the student that she should complete a full, timed practice test by our next session."
"Today the student took a benchmark math section and got a 27. He was fine on time and scored about the same on the "easy" and "medium" sections and twice as many mistakes on the "hard" section. 27 is a solid score, and he should be able to pull it up with review."
