Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this lesson, we worked on an English project he has due at the end of the week. His assignment was to distill the major traits of each character in the book into 6-word 'memoirs'. We discussed his thoughts on each of the characters, identified the characteristic that best fit his opinions, and worked to make his expression of those thoughts as concise as possible to fit within the 6-word parameters of the assignment."
"The student is playing John Hancock in a play his English class is reading. He had to research and write a description of Hancock and his life. The majority of our session was dedicated to researching and reading about Hancock while simultaneously taking notes in outline form. I have been teaching him about the importance of detailed outlines in order to keep thoughts organized and retaining information about what was read. Then I had him construct the description. He would write one or two sentences at a time and we would discuss, brainstorm, and reconstruct phrases."
"Today we worked on a selection of vocabulary. The student struggles a bit with sentence structure, and articulating her thoughts. She was diligent about completing the assignments, but didn't seem particularly engaged or thrilled to be doing the work. We talked about mnemonic devices, and other tricks for learning vocabulary. I did not see any scores or grades this session. She may send me samples of her creative writing, which will be a fun addition to her drier language arts homework. No specific concerns from the session."
