Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session the student and I looked at his calculus homework on integrals of inverse trigonometric functions. Despite its daunting name, this topic was certainly more than manageable. We took some time to examine where the various formulas came from as opposed to simply attempting to memorize another handful of equations. This appeared to be a productive discussion as we were able to make it all the way through the homework smoothly."
"We worked on slope fields and differential equations. The biggest challenge is keeping track of functions and their derivatives. When she left she had 3 questions left of the problem set, so she was planning on finishing those problems. No concerns."
"We reviewed for the student's test. We covered problems where the volume of a solid object must be calculated by integrating the area of a crosssection.
We came up with a generic set of steps that can be applied to any problem of this nature."

"Today the student finished his portfolio project. After finishing the project, we worked on a percent change quiz and she got all the questions right. We also answered a discussion question. We finished the session by going over her chapter test. She knew how to set up the problems, and how to solve them. She needed a little more help with word problems, but she did seem to have a good understanding of this unit."
"The student has been learning to use rounding to estimate values. In his assignment, he was frequently asked to round to one nonzero digit. Since we had worked with rounding before, he generally knew what he was doing. Other than that, it was basically just multiplication and division which he knows how to do."
"The student and I met for a session of Algebra 2 tutoring. Recently the student did very poorly on a quiz. However he did not have a copy of the test so we could not review it as I had originally planned. Instead we focused the session on finding the vertex form of the equation. The student understood the procedure to get the vertex form."
"Tonight, we covered practice midterms exams that his instructor emailed his students. The problems we focused on were Trapezoid Rule, and washer/disk method for volumes of revolution. I also taught him Simpson's rule, as it is acceptable on the exam he needs to take, but will not be taught in class. Tomorrow, we will practice more of his practice exams."
"We covered geometric and arithmetic sequences, finding the formula and the nth term of each type of sequence, and focused on solving textbook problems. The student had a strong understanding of the material. We also covered molarity and dilutions, and completed workbook problems. The student will continue to work on this topic, particularly unit conversions within these types of problems."
"We went over percentages again. The student is doing a lot better with double checking his own work now. I left him with the task of knowing the equations to find percentages, and he will be quizzed about them next week."
"The student has a test on a chapter of her book next week, so we worked on material that she wanted to review before then. She had a worksheet for homework on trapezoid Riemann sums that we worked on. From there, she picked out a couple of other topics to go over that she did not feel confident on. In particular, we spent most of the time working on antiderivatives as they relate to integrals. She made good progress, and by the end had command of the material."
"We covered the different characteristics of functions; how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide functions; x and y intercepts; and domain and range. There was a quiz that we worked from that was a grade of 20%. The main area that the student had struggled with was understanding the definitions of the terms. I left no extra work except to go over what we had done. The session was an overall success and clarity was reached."
"We covered a range of old and new topics including disks/washers method, centers of mass, and work problems. We spent about an hour going through integration by parts, and working on homework problems for this week. She had a few problems left where we went through the "LIPET" method, which the student will do for homework. We worked through a lot of previous work, and are moving forward with progress! No concerns at this point; she understands the material/formulas, just needs to work on the execution and how to put the formulas to use!"
