Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We talked about her past SAT experience and decided that going through the practice test would be the best thing to do. She seemed to struggle the most with math and some vocabulary, but overall understood most of it. She just needs guidance and pointers."
"Went over several concepts such as equilibrium, chemical potential, half-life, reaction rate, and the ideal gas equation. We also worked on practice questions, which revealed that there is a fair amount of information to memorize and can barely be derived from concepts taught to chemistry students at this level."
"Today we went over the homework that I had assigned the student to complete. We reviewed the critical reading section and general strategies once again. We also did one math section. At the end, I timed her as she completed a double-passage critical reading section and I noticed that she definitely seemed to be grasping the concepts better!"
"The student is progressing and answers the questions accurately when the definitions are discussed. He is to finish three additional exercises, complete the reading passage practice, look over the root words packet, and review/generate sentences from the vocabulary list."
"The student and I went over 20 questions from a Math section first. She completed the 20 questions within the allotted time period. We then moved on to a Science section and she completely knocked it out of the park. She has shown steady improvement on all the areas we've worked on."
"I see improvement every time with the student! She is really doing well with internalizing the methods on how to approach SAT problems. She has fewer questions each time and seems to be getting more problems right every time. Today, we went over issues she had with a few sections she did on her own and went through a reading section together. She will do a full-length test before next time, and if we have any extra time after going over any issues she had, we will work through a writing section together."
"Today, the student and I went over the basics of the entire test, outlining strategies for all the sections. I emailed her a formula sheet for mathematics, and we went over the Evelyn Wood method to help boost her reading skills (the two areas she was weakest in). For homework, I assigned 30 math problems, an Evelyn Wood tutorial, and a math packet emphasizing skills necessary for the ACT. I look forward to our next session."
"We worked on timed trials for the math and English sections. He did 5 math questions at a time, where he did about as well as he did last time. We went over the questions he missed, and we will need to continue to focus on the Pythagorean Theorem, F.O.I.L., fractions and adding negative numbers. Then he did one English passage, where he did well on time and did slightly better than last time on accuracy."
"Today the student and I finished reviewing the full length practice exam I had given her for homework two weeks prior. The bulk of time was spent on joint-solving the more difficult math problems. Afterwards, we worked on the student's reading timing. She seemed to do best when she read for longer, around 4 minutes, and then answered questions. Even with the long reading time she saves time overall by not having to reference the passage as often."
"We worked on algebra, Planar geometry, and 3D geometry during this session. The drills were fairly straightforward, but an excellent reminder for him. He appears to be recollecting his previous experiences now, and these drills appear to be very effective."
"We went over the student's practice test, focusing on the last 15 questions of math and the entire reading section. In the reading section, we worked on ways to get through the passages quickly and use little notes to help get to the relevant part of the reading when answering questions. The student will send his answers to us for more in depth grading, and I will give him some practice work to boost his specific areas of need once I have that information."
"The student and I covered math, writing, and reading. In general, she's making good progress on the math and multiple choice writing sections. Continued exposure to new types of problems will solidify her score in this area. From now on, I would like her to adopt a "pencils down" policy once her timer expires. That will hopefully motivate her to answer questions faster."
